Nigeria Cracks Down on Illegal Mining: Minister Alake Strengthens Mining Marshals

Strengthening Nigeria’s Mining Sector: A Minister’s Vision for a Safer, More Profitable Future

The Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, has a bold plan to transform Nigeria’s mining industry. He aims to crush illegal mining operations and ensure the sector’s long-term success. In a recent address, Alake revealed how his strategies are making a difference.

Empowering Mining Marshals

Alake announced plans to enhance the capabilities of mining marshals, the enforcement agency tasked with combating illegal mining. By providing better vehicles, equipment, and weaponry, the government aims to expand their reach to all 774 local governments. This expansion will significantly improve mine and miner security.

Achievements and Challenges

The mining marshals have already made notable strides. Alake highlighted their success in reclaiming 90 sites from bandits and illegal miners, prosecuting over 300 suspects, and monitoring 450 sites threatened by illegal activities. However, concerns about inter-agency rivalry with other military and security agencies, such as the Nigerian Army and Police, were addressed. Alake praised the smooth collaboration that has enabled the mining marshals to excel.

A Seven-Point Agenda for Success

Alake introduced a seven-point agenda as a roadmap for the sector’s development. This initiative has brought numerous benefits, including sanitizing the sector and blocking financial leakages. As a result, the ministry’s total revenue has skyrocketed from N6 billion in 2022 to N12 billion in 2024 and now stands at an impressive N26 billion as of October 2023.

Compliance and International Competitiveness

To ensure compliance with the Nigerian Minerals and Mining Act, over 3,700 titles have been revoked for non-payment of annual fees and non-adherence to the use-or-lose principle. Companies have been warned to comply with community development agreements and environmental obligations. Additionally, the establishment of the Nigeria Solid Minerals Company has attracted investors seeking joint ventures, positioning the sector for international competitiveness.

A Thank You and a Call to Action

Air Commodore Olushola Oluokun, Director of Information, Communications, and Technology at the Nigerian Defence College, expressed gratitude to the minister for the enlightening lecture. This presentation shed light on various subjects studied by the course participants. As the conversation continues, the audience is encouraged to share their thoughts and engage in the debate surrounding Nigeria’s mining future.
